| Rev Beth W. Johnston, the minister of the Rexton Pastoral
Charge of The United Church of
Canada. (in rural New Brunswick) of the Maritime
Conference and Chignecto Presbytery, used material presented by
Regina in her '96 sermon. Truro artist and writer Regina Coupar has written this about
Pentecost, "It has been my observation that a gentle spirit lives
within each of us. We are born with it as creatures made in the image of
God. This spirit often goes unnoticed because of the little attention
paid to spirituality in our culture. It is a gentle voice that can be
drowned out by the many other more dramatic and forceful voices around
it. We need to know about this voice, so that we can look for it and
nurture it. We long to be fulfilled and we need to understand that it is
possible for us to be fulfilled when we look in the proper direction.
Jesus said, "... the kingdom of God is within you." (Luke
17:21) The kingdom of God is within the grasp of all who respond.
"The pentecostal process is crucial to one's fulfilment. It is
the food of our spiritual being. It changes us, not into a collective
body of like souls, but into individual vessels that are enabled to
carry the Spirit of God within. We are changed, but not changed into
someone else. We are changed into ourselves, into the someone we were
created to be. This is not an event; it is a continual process which
prepares us for the continuity of our lives, in life, in death, and in
life on the other side of death. We need to experience it now while we
are alive in human form, so that we will continue to recognize it in the
stages which follow." Coupar has also written this poem called
"pentecost" when the Spirit
touches us
we become changed
the new wine
which is poured
into each of us
by the Spirit of God
changes the vessel
which holds it
where we were empty
we become filled
where we are dead
we are brought to life
where we were afraid
we are afraid no more |
